What is beauty? Can there ever be a consensus on what is considered beautiful? Or is beauty a purely subjective perception? Is beauty timeless?

If you look at design clas­sics from the Bauhaus period, for exam­ple, you can see a pat­tern. At the time of their cre­ation, these designs were rad­i­cal and rev­o­lu­tion­ary, con­ceived of a readi­ness to break with con­ven­tion and com­pletely rethink solu­tions. Steel pipe fur­ni­ture rede­fined the con­cept of a hand­crafted wooden chair. Curved steel piping was intended for indus­trial man­u­fac­tur­ing, but now it came to enable a new arche­type – the can­tilever chair. It her­alded a new dimen­sion in com­fort and ulti­mately became a clas­sic that has lost noth­ing of its rel­e­vance 80 years after it first appeared. This logic cre­ates a true beauty and at the same time results in a sus­tain­able – think time­less – prod­uct.

LED tech­nol­ogy not only allows us to design extremely eco­nom­i­cal lumi­naires, but new arche­types too. A lumi­naire like »The Line« would be incon­ceiv­able with­out this tech­nol­ogy, and fully inte­grat­ing the reflec­tors into the pole is a log­i­cal next step. This max­i­mum reduc­tion in form allows these lumi­naires to be used in the com­plex urban space in a range of shapes, colours and styles from dif­fer­ent peri­ods of con­struc­tion. It forms a bridge between high effi­ciency on one side of the divide and light qual­ity on the other, and will still be rel­e­vant in many years to come.
