Jennette’s Pier was first opened in South Nags Head, North Carolina back in 1939. Part of the Outer Banks, it was a popular destination for fishermen young and old in search of catching a red drum, bluefish, striped bass, flounder, or king mackerel. Built originally to 754’ long and 16’ wide with a 28’ wide T-shaped end, Jennette’s Pier withstood many hurricanes and nor-easter storms, though parts including the pier house had to be reconstructed several times.

In 2003, the pier was sold to the North Carolina Aquarium Society. When it was later mostly destroyed by Hurricane Isabel, the society determined it would be best to rebuild in concrete, creating a 1,000; long educational ocean pier. Most recently, Hurricane Dorian damaged the wind turbines of Jennette’s Pier, but the concrete construction proved hurricane-worthy.

Inula Columns by Selux were chosen for the latest lighting update to the pier, in part because of their Dark-Sky Friendly lighting, but also for the strength and durability. The columns can be seen in many wedding photographs taken at the pier, and create a comfortable ambience for night events. Inula helped with Jennette’s Pier’s LEED Platinum Certification, the highest honor from the USGBC.
