Founded in 1866, the Des Moines Public Library serves a population of approximately 200,000. With six branches, the urban library supports multiple outreach programs and houses four special collections including the Iowa Collection - an assortment of books and other items reflecting the history and culture of the State of Iowa and the City of Des Moines.
Opened in 2006, the Public Library features "green" design and is said to "convey the atmosphere of the city" due its unique design, aesthetics, and pragmatic approach for both energy conservation and user friendliness.
David Chipperfield's new public library of Des Moines, Iowa features a 3500 square meter metallic sheen glass facade. Over 7,300 feet of M60 Direct suspended and recessed provide the lighting for this award winning centerpiece of urban renewal for Des Moines.
